A cracked server runs in offline mode, which means it does not check your account against Mojang's authentication servers. Anyone can connect with any username from any launcher. That is the entire appeal, and it is why cracked servers are common in places where buying the game is difficult.
The trade-off is identity. Because usernames are not verified, anybody could log in as you, so nearly every cracked server runs AuthMe or something like it and asks you to register with a password the first time you join. Use a password you do not use anywhere else, and expect skins to come from a third-party service rather than Mojang.
Two practical notes: many cracked servers accept premium accounts as well, and support for older clients is common because players arrive on whatever version their launcher shipped with. Read the join instructions rather than guessing — the login flow is the one thing that differs from every other server on this list.
1.12.2 is still the default for modded, and here is why
Version 1.12 arrived in 2017 with concrete, glazed terracotta, parrots, the recipe book and advancements replacing the old achievement list. It is remembered for none of that. It is remembered because 1.13 followed it with the flattening, which removed numeric block IDs and rewrote how the game stores world data.
That break stranded an enormous amount of work. Forge mods written for 1.12.2 could not be ported cheaply, so the packs people had spent years assembling stayed where they were, and 1.12.2 became the most played modded version in the game's history. Large packs and their servers are still running on it today.
If you are joining a 1.12 server, expect Forge, expect a launcher profile pinned to 1.12.2, and expect an older feel: no netherite, no raids, no bees, and terrain that stops at Y=0. In exchange you get a mod ecosystem nothing since has quite matched for sheer size. The final patch landed in September 2017 and the version has not moved since, which is exactly why pack authors trust it — a modlist assembled today behaves the same as one assembled five years ago.
