McMMO adds RPG skills to survival. Mining, woodcutting, excavation, herbalism, fishing, swords, axes, archery, unarmed, acrobatics, taming, repair and alchemy each level as you use them, and each unlocks an ability you trigger by right-clicking with the matching tool in hand.
In practice it changes what your hours are worth. Super breaker turns a mining trip into a much larger haul, tree feller drops a whole spruce at once, and a high swords level with serrated strikes shifts PvP enough that most servers have to balance around it. Party chat and shared experience make it a group activity rather than a solo grind.
Ask two things before settling in: the experience rate, and whether power level is capped. A server at ten times vanilla rates is a different game from one at standard rates, and an uncapped leaderboard on a two-year-old world means the top ten are out of reach. Some servers also disable McMMO inside PvP arenas.
Why 1.18 forced so many servers to reset
Caves & Cliffs Part II rewrote terrain generation. Worlds went from a bedrock floor at zero to one at -64 with a build limit of 320, caves became large connected systems carved by noise rather than short tunnels, and aquifers put water and lava at any depth. Mountains split into meadows, groves, snowy slopes and jagged peaks.
That is why so many maps were reset in late 2021. Old chunks had none of the new depth, and while blending smoothed the seam, a pre-1.18 world had no deepslate layer and none of the new cave systems anywhere people had already explored. Owners either reset the map or added a second world for fresh terrain.
Joining a 1.18 server today usually means a plugin or a modpack is pinned to that release. The terrain still looks current, ore distribution is the modern one, and mining below zero works exactly as it does now. What you give up is everything from the Wild Update onwards.
