Playing a character instead of a username

Roleplay servers ask you to play a character rather than a username. That might be a medieval kingdom with heraldry and written law, a modern city with jobs, cars and a phone plugin, or a nation-building map where wars get declared in a Discord channel long before anyone draws a sword.

Almost all of them are whitelisted, and the application is the point — it filters for people who will stay in character and write more than one line. Expect lore documents, a map with claimed regions, and a firm rule against letting out-of-character knowledge change what your character does.

If you are new to it, start somewhere with an active events team and modest writing requirements, and read the existing story before you invent a backstory that contradicts it. The servers that last have an events calendar and staff who run plots; the ones that do not become an empty map with excellent lore.

What you get on a 1.19 server

The Wild Update arrived in June 2022 with the deep dark, ancient cities and the warden — a blind mob that hunts by vibration and hits hard enough to kill through netherite. It also added mangrove swamps, mud and mud bricks, frogs and tadpoles, the allay, the boat with a chest, and the goat horn.

The version is remembered almost as much for 1.19.1, which introduced chat reporting and set off the loudest argument the community had that year. Server owners mostly shrugged, since server chat has always been moderated locally, but it pushed some communities to stay on older builds or run mods that strip the feature out.

As somewhere to play, 1.19 is comfortable and thoroughly supported. Sculk sensors work, the plugin ecosystem is mature, and all the Caves & Cliffs terrain is already in place. It is a sensible landing spot if the server you want depends on a plugin or a mod that never made it past this release.
