Survival with borders, taxes and neighbours

Towny is survival with local government. You found a town, claim chunks with town blocks, invite residents, set plot permissions and pay upkeep out of the town bank every day. Towns join nations, nations trade or declare war, and the map slowly fills with borders that were negotiated rather than drawn by a plugin.

It plays slower than factions and is much friendlier to people who mostly want to build. Grief is handled by permissions rather than by fighting, and most conflict is about land and taxes. Outposts, farm plots and embassy plots let a decent-sized town run a real internal economy without ever leaving its own walls.

Joining an existing town skips the hardest part, which is daily upkeep on an empty treasury. Ask what happens when a town falls — some servers unclaim the land and let it go wild, others keep the buildings standing — and check the tax rate before you accept a residency invitation.

What you get on a 1.19 server

The Wild Update arrived in June 2022 with the deep dark, ancient cities and the warden — a blind mob that hunts by vibration and hits hard enough to kill through netherite. It also added mangrove swamps, mud and mud bricks, frogs and tadpoles, the allay, the boat with a chest, and the goat horn.

The version is remembered almost as much for 1.19.1, which introduced chat reporting and set off the loudest argument the community had that year. Server owners mostly shrugged, since server chat has always been moderated locally, but it pushed some communities to stay on older builds or run mods that strip the feature out.

As somewhere to play, 1.19 is comfortable and thoroughly supported. Sculk sensors work, the plugin ecosystem is mature, and all the Caves & Cliffs terrain is already in place. It is a sensible landing spot if the server you want depends on a plugin or a mod that never made it past this release.
